Ever since I stumbled upon the existence of online poker sites in 2002, I’ve been primarily an online player.

Sure, I’ll play in occasional home games with my buddies. And I’ll visit casino poker rooms from time to time. But for the most part, I play online.

While Internet poker certainly has its advantages – no need to travel while playing in the comfort of my home, no need to wait for an open seat, and no pots lost to astute live players who can read my obvious tells – there is one huge drawback to online play.

I want to feel those poker chips, man!

I want the pleasure of scooping pots! I want the joy of stacking my chips. I want to try Esfandiari-esque tricks with the poker chips between my fingers!

I can enjoy none of those activities while playing online. All I can do is point and click, building up a chip stack that looks nice dollar-wise or chip-wise, but causes me a bit of sensory deprivation since I have no chips to touch, feel, play with, or stack.

I would have included the terms fondle and caress, but I don’t want to give readers the wrong impression regarding my love for the game of poker and/or the chips used to keep score. But seriously, poker players know what I’m talking about. The feel of custom poker chips in your fingers and hands, especially when the chip stack in front of you is quite large, is arguably one of life’s little pleasures for poker players.

My Solution

I’ve managed to find a way to alleviate my sensory deprivation of poker chips problem while playing online. I just pull out my set of custom poker chips and stack ’em on my desk while I play.

I’ll riffle the chips, spin and twirl the chips, and perform chip pullovers. And when I’m done picking the chips up off the floor, I’ll try those moves again!

The whole idea is to simulate a live game as much as possible. That sometimes includes talking to my computer monitor when the situation calls for it.

“I’m all-in,” I confidently say, pushing a stack of chips across my desk into an imaginary live pot while I click the all-in button with my mouse. If I win, I’ll scoop the pot, happily re-stacking the chips. If I lose and bust out, the poker chips will stay there until I join another poker game.

Where to Get Custom Poker Chips

Having my poker chip set handy while playing online helps me to get a better feel for the game. It may not work for everybody – and friends and family members who don’t play or understand poker and have witnessed me playing with poker chips during online play have more than once questioned my sanity – but it works for me.

If you’re an online poker player who feels something lacking during your play, there are tons of places where you can get custom poker chips to take care of a possible sensory deprivation problem. You can try,, or even

Get some custom poker chips and see if it improves your game. What have you got to lose? You may or may not win more money playing online, but you very well could become a chip riffling expert.
