Dundee Poker Pro Michael Gordon was found dead in a house on 22 of June at the age of just 33. On Monday, his family paid tribute to a son who would “do anything for anyone”.
Family and friends travelled from as far as Canada for Michael’s funeral to pay their tribute to the Scotsman.
Poker wasn´t Michael´s only passion; He played pool for teams at the Stobswell Recreation Club and for the Old Mill pub, was a dedicated Rangers fan.
He was close to his three nephews, especially Derren, 3, son of his 26-year-old sister Holly. “He loved his three nephews. Michael didn’t have kids but he was good with them — a doting uncle. When Holly was at work he looked after Derren every day. Now Derren doesn’t know what’s happening.” Says Michael´s brother Paul, who works at Michelin.
Brother Paul, 32, found out about his brother’s death after a phone call from police. He said: “It has been a terrible shock for everyone. I spoke to him the Tuesday before and he was just his usual self. It is really difficult to come to terms with him not being here anymore.”
Paul also talked about his brother´s professional poker player life ““He was a top-level poker player and won loads of tournaments online and in Dundee. He was so good he made a living from it — his knowledge of the game was better than anyone I’ve known.”
Rangers fan Michael grew up in Fintry and attended Whitfield High School. According to his brother, he ran away from home when he was only 15 but only made it as far as the garden shed. According to Paul, Michael was a character but he was a big softie.
The news found his father, who is an offshore worker, when he was travelling to a conference in Brighton. He immediately took a train back to be with his family.
He said: “I was on my way to Brighton and was phoned just before I got into London, so I did an about-turn and came straight back. Michael would do anything for anyone and was very protective of his little brother and sister.”
Following the funeral, there were scores of tributes posted on social media sites.
Michael´s cause of death still has not been released.
