PokerStars and Olympique Lyonnais have signed a media deal, making the poker operator an official supporter of the Ligue 1 club.
Commercials for PokerStars’ French-facing site will appear on Lyon’s official television channel and website, in addition to advertising at the club’s Stade Gerland stadium.
PokerStars, which is No. 2 in the regulated French market behind Winamax, will hold Lyon-themed poker tournaments where fans can win matchday tickets and signed shirts.
“Digital is a major axis for the development of the club. Gaming companies being major players in the digital sector, it is completely natural for us to associate with this site,” Vincent-Baptiste Closon, Lyon’s director of marketing, told French site Sport Buzz Business.
It’s not the football club’s first partnership with an online gambling operator. Lyon had a sponsorship deal with Betclic Everest, featuring branding on the team’s shirts, which was terminated in 2012. Lyon is currently sponsored by Korean car manufacturer Hyundai, and sits second in Ligue 1, level on points with leaders Paris Saint-Germain.
