Big names are already suiting up for the big World Poker Tour (WPT) high-stakes event in South Africa scheduled for February 14 – 15, 2014.
The series reserved for the big spenders, WPT Alpha8, will return in 2014 in Johannesburg and the field has just gotten tougher. After Erik Seidel, Antonio Esfandiari, Jason Mercier and Dan “jungleman” Cates, another two big poker names confirmed their presence in the $100,000 buy-in tournament: Ivey League founder Phil Ivey and one of the Team Ivey pros, Dan Smith.
Ivey, who played just five live tournaments in 2013, his last one being the World Series of Poker (WSOP) Europe Mixed Max Event #3, wants to start the New Year in style by playing the highest stakes and also being around the most dangerous predators in the animal kingdom. All the participants will enjoy a three-day photo safari at the Ivory Tree Game Lodge where they will have the unique opportunity to see lions, leopards and cheetahs hunting in their natural habitat.
Smith has already played four events in 2014 including the Aussie Millions AUD$25,000 Challenge where he finished second, winning over $244k. He won the WPT Doyle Brunson Five Diamond Poker Classic back in December and is ready for more in Johannesburg.
Also joining the high-stakes crew will be German Philipp Gruissem. He is looking for his third Alpha8 trophy in a row after winning the last two events in London in October 2013 and St. Kitts in November.
