iSeriesLIVE Inaugural Event Won By James Dempsey

England’s James Dempsey bested a star-studded field of ten of the world’s top poker pros in the inaugural iSeriesLIVE winner-take-all SitNGo shootout event in Dublin, Ireland, that featured exposed hole cards for each hand and interactive live betting by fans.

As part of the 2012 Irish Open festivities, the ten pros paid a €10,000 buy-in and were sequestered throughout the tourney without access to any mobile devices. The tournament was shown live via Internet stream. Wagering was offered by PaddyPower’s online sportsbook, with various bets available, including the winner of the event, first to be eliminated, and last longer propositions.

The first player busting out was Phil Hellmuth after roughly four hours of play. The Poker Brat lost a huge stack of chips when his pocket ladies fell to David Ulliott’s 6-6 in the hole when a 6 landed on the board and gave the Devilfish a set. Hellmuth was KO’d when he shoved his short stack all-in with A-Q and couldn’t pair up in the coin flip against the pocket nines of Daniel Negreanu. That gave bettors who wagered on KidPoker to last longer than Hellmuth a nice chunk of change.

Negreanu busted out in eighth place when his open-ended straight flush draw didn’t connect and his huge stack of chips went to Dempsey, who held top pair. Flushy, a screen name used by Dempsey online, used his huge chip stack proficiently the rest of the way, knocking out Carlos Mortenson in fourth place. After Devilfish eliminated Mario Ho in third place, the heads-up battle between between the two Englishmen was on.

Ulliott did manage to close in on Flushy, but lost the tournament when his A-8 was bested by Dempsey’s big slick in the event’s final hand. Along with the title of the iSeriesLIVE maiden event, Dempsey pocketed €100,000. His career tournament winnings both in live events and online are fast approaching $3 million. The young English pro’s resume includes championships in the $1,500 Pot-Limit Hold’em event at the 2010 World Series of Poker, as well as a World Poker Tour title in 2011. Early odds on Dempsey winning the iSeriesLIVE shootout were set at 9-1.
