Daniel Negreanu Challenges Full Tilt Pros

After trading barbs via Twitter, Daniel Negreanu has issued a challenge to Gus Hansen and the Full Tilt Professionals to play heads-up against himself and two other Team PokerStars pros.

It all began when Hansen recalled a hand versus Negreanu during a 2006 High Stakes Poker game in which Hansen hit quad 5’s on the turn and crushed Negreanu’s full house, taking down a $575,000 pot in the process. Hansen tweeted the video of the famous hand to KidPoker and added, “Wonder if I ever get another chance to take your money.”

Not to be outdone, Negreanu answered back by saying that he had intentions of congratulating Hansen on his success this year, but realized that he was viewing the Dane’s graph upside down. Hansen is down close to $800,000 this year after losing more than $3.2 million in the final two months of 2012 at the relaunched Full Tilt Poker, according to the High Stake Database.

Following an offer from Hansen to “come play me on Full Tilt Poker for a [High Stakes Poker] rematch,” Negreanu released a video challenging Hansen and fellow Team Full Tilt pros Viktor Blom and Tom Dwan to play heads-up against a trio of PokerStars pros. Negreanu will choose two other PokerStars teammates to join him from a list that includes Jason Mercier, Vanessa Selbst, Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier, Ike Haxton and Eugene Katchalov. KidPoker has asked the poker community to get involved by voting for the PokerStars teammates that he should select.

Hansen accepted the challenge on behalf of Blom and Dwan and said, “I have this funny feeling they will make time for this.” The battle will go down during the EPT in London set for March 5-16. It will consist of three heads-up matches and the team who wins two of three will take the title. Since Negreanu has an arsenal of players to choose from, he has agreed to allow Hansen to determine the match ups once KidPoker announces who he has chosen as teammates.

PokerStars and Full Tilt were heated rivals pre-Black Friday, waging intense marketing efforts to sway new players. Now that the two are sister sites under the Rational Group umbrella, part of that rivalry is gone. But it appears that Negreanu and Hansen are aiming to build it up again.
