After a successful inaugural season in 2014, the Senior Poker Tour (SPT) gets ready for its first stop in 2015 – the Horseshoe Casino & Hotel in Tunica, Mississippi.

For players 50 years old and up, SPT action begins on Thursday, February 19 with two very affordable events at buy-ins of $175 and $125, the latter a Turbo Deepstack. Day 1A of the Main Event begins on Feb. 20, featuring a $550 entry fee.

Day 1B of the Main Event gets underway on Saturday, Feb. 21, with a champion crowned on Day 2 the following day, Sunday the 22nd. Highlights for Sunday include a special $125 LIPS (Ladies International Poker Series) event, and a $175 Tag Team Event. All tournaments throughout the four-day festival allow for re-entries until the 4th level.

Back to the beginning

The SPT is celebrating its first year of action by returning to where it all began in January 2014, Tunica’s Horsehoe. The debut Main Event last year garnered 121 entries for a $65,500 prize pool.

With more recognition and awareness of SPT’s existence in its second season that begins in a couple days, it is expected that an even larger prize pool will be created than that of 2014.

The word had spread about the SPT by June of last year at the Venetian Casino in Las Vegas where a $250,000 prize pool paid out the top 45 finishers. Mitch Hecht from Toronto took home the title and just shy of $50,000 in prize money.

Team SPT

Representing the SPT are nearly a dozen team pros, with Linda Johnson, Robert Turner, Dennis Phillips and Marsha Waggoner among them. Last month, Waggoner finished as runner-up at the Aussie Millions in the H.O.R.S.E. event, banking $21,225.

Other tour destinations for the SPT in 2015 include the Cherokee Casino in West Siloam Springs, Oklahoma in April, and a Senior Poker Week at the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas in June that runs alongside the WSOP. On August 29, the SPT will set sail for the Seniors Championship at Sea, a week-long cruise that leaves the port in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and will include stops in Haiti, Jamaica and Mexico.

The tour at sea is sponsored by Card Player Cruises aboard the Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas. Prices for the 7-night vacation package start at $849.

The Horseshoe Casino in Tunica will be giving away two $2500 packages to that event. One will go to the Main Event winner on Feb. 22, and the other package will be won via a random drawing. Players who participate in any SPT event in Tunica will receive one entry for each buy-in and re-entry.

Seniors interested in joining the tour in Tunica or other destinations can expect earlier start times than other tours. Game variety is also highlighted.
