WSOP Launches US Play Money Site

World Series of Poker (WSOP) has officially launched its online poker service on the first day of the 44th annual live WSOP event.

Released by WSOP’s owner Caesar Interactive, the site currently only offers play money games, although a real money service is also said to be well in the pipeline. The play money site was put up on the WSOP website just minutes before the first live event of the WSOP got under way. Within a short time after the launch, the first game on the WSOP online site was started.

The launch of the play money only service is a good business move by Caesars Interactive. Firstly, it is being released when all of the poker world’s eyes are set to be on the WSOP for the next few months. This should lead to increased interest in the poker service if the WSOP and Caesar’s advertise it throughout the event, which the company has already said it plans to do.

Launching only the play money part of the site should also help Caesars gauge how much interest and traffic the overall service would get if it were to also launch a real money service. This would help lead to better business and financial expectations for the site, and would likely help determine just how much money and resources Caesar’s should invest in it.

All players are allowed to play on WSOP’s play money service. However, only players who are located within the state of Nevada would be permitted to play on any real money service it releases. This is the same with real money games on UltimatePoker, and would likely be the case with any other real money poker sites licenced in the state.

While an exact date for a real money site launch has not yet been made, Caesars have previously stated its intentions to aim for a launch during the US summer. Caesars’ Vice President of Corporate Communications Seth Palansky previously said the company was taking the “necessary steps” needed to be able to properly launch the real money service.
