Online poker ring game players logged on and played at poker sites in greater numbers last week, as the industry experienced its first player traffic increase in more than three months.
The rise in cash game player traffic was modest at 1%, but swinging the pendulum into positive territory in the middle of summer is progress nonetheless. As reported here on July 1, a comparison to cash game player traffic to the numbers posted by PokerScout.com at the beginning of 2015 showed almost across the board decreases among the ipoker industry’s top 10 poker rooms and networks.
Last week saw seven of those top 10 gain player traffic. Leading the charge was Winamax.fr, advancing two places up to no. 6 worldwide since the first of the month. The France-facing site picked up an additional 200 players to 1,050 in the process.
The boost in players at Winamax is attributed to a promo called Cash Game Bingo jackpot, a game aimed at reeling in casual players with a chance to fill up bingo cards based upon hole cards received. The promotion saw ring game player traffic balloon to an increase of more than 100% on its first day, but has since waned after recreational players apparently were not shouting “Bingo” at their computer screens as often as they had hoped.
Many may recall that Winamax began the lottery-style SitNGo craze by creating and launching Expresso Poker two years ago that has since been copied and rolled out at a number of poker sites throughout the industry, including Spin & Go at PokerStars. Hats off to the marketing team at Winamax for dreaming up such innovations as Expresso Poker and Cash Game Bingo, as new games that create interest and draw players are sorely needed.
Whether or not the copycats come out for Cash Game Bingo remains to be seen. The concept could perhaps use a tweak here or there to lower the frustration level of players who are trying to fill out a bingo card and win cash.

At present, the Multi State Poker Network of WSOP.com in Nevada and the poker sites operating in Delaware are averaging the same number of cash game players (190) as when July began despite the conclusion of the 46th running of the WSOP – save for the final table in November.
Also remaining stable over the past three weeks was the New Jersey pairing of WSOP.com and 888poker.com with 180 players. Their competition in the Garden State – the tandem of BorgataPoker.com and Partypoker.com – contributed to the recent increase in ring game player traffic worldwide by gaining 10 players up to 120 in the same span of time.
The ipoker industry as a whole remains 17% off the pace of mid-July 2014 for cash game traffic. But don’t forget that a portion of those missing players may have merely moved over to jackpot-style SitNGo games such as Spin & Go at PokerStars, which hasn’t yet celebrated its first anniversary.
