"Runner, Runner" Already Has a Release Date

Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake will star in the newly acquired project “Runner, Runner” , from the writers of “Rounders”. The dramatic thriller, which will be directed by Brad Furman who recently directed “Lincoln Lawyer”, is a set in the world of illegal online gambling and will hit the theaters in 27th of September 2013.

Producers include Leonardo Di Caprio´s Production Company Appian Way and Jennifer Davisson Killoran, Double Feature’s Michael Shamberg and Stacey Sher, Stone Village Pictures’ Scott Steindorff and Koppelman and Levien.

It seems like Justin Timberlake, who played Napster guru Sean Parker in David Fincher’s “The Social Network, will be going back online but this time he will be entering the high stakes online gambling world.

The movie is about businessman Ivan Block, played by Affleck, who operates an offshore gambling business online. Richie, a Princeton college student who pays for school with on-line gambling, bottoms out and travels to Costa Rica to confront the on-line mastermind, Ivan, whom he believes has swindled him. Ivan sees a kindred spirit in Richie and brings the younger man into his operation. Richie becomes his younger protégé however things start to change when stakes get incredibly high and dangerous.

The screenwriter Brian Koppelman said “There was [a script] we wrote that I knew was a movie. It was mind-boggling to me that it wasn’t a movie.” on the Comedian Jay Mohr´s conversational comedy podcast Mohr Stories. Koppelman and Levien began writing it in August 2010 and turned in a first draft by January 2011. By April 2012, “Runner, Runner” was in production.

“Runner, Runner” has caused both excitement and controversy in real online poker community. Some argue that going from Matt Damon/Edward Norton to Ben Affleck/Justin Timberlake is quite a big down step although they seem to miss the point that this movie is not a sequel or prequel to Rounders in the traditional sense. Others think that any publicity is good publicity for online poker. One thing is for sure though; “Runner Runner” is yet another sign of the way online gambling has made its way into mainstream culture, as more and more people from around the world take up this form of entertainment.
