I’ll admit that I seldom go out of my way to download the latest and greatest poker app. In fact, the majority of the time I only download an app when a client has a request for a review of said app.
A couple of days ago, I noticed PokerUpdate’s resident rose-tinted keyboard owner Robbie Strazynski mentioned that Poker Central had an app. I didn’t pay too much attention at first. Then yesterday, he mentioned that he was excited to have access to their library of content.
Library of content? Anyone that has followed my writing over the last year knows that I have a lot of love for Poker Central, so I did something I normally don’t do. I downloaded a poker app.
If you are a fan of Poker Central or you are one of many that don’t have access to one of the channel’s delivery modes, then you should download this app. Keep reading to learn more from my personal review of the Poker Central App.
Easy Download – Smooth Install – Simple Design
The first thing I did was go to Google Play and search for Poker Central. When the app’s landing page loads, you will notice from the stats that a lot of poker fans don’t know that this app is out there. (Well, you know now obviously.)
Click on install and the app downloads to your phone super fast. I’m on U.S. Cellular with coverage that’s normally 3G rather than 4G and I was able to download the app in about a minute. Installation was a breeze and less than 5 minutes after going to Google Play, I had launched the Poker Central app.
One thing that I don’t like about many apps is that you have to jump through a bunch of hoops to access all the available features. Poker Central developers clearly used the KISS (Keep it Simple, Stupid) method in developing their app as even a rank beginner can figure this app out.
You have two options to access content. First, you can scroll down the main page to access the content. In the upper left hand corner there is an menu button you can click that will give you the same options as you get on the main page.
Also, the first option on the menu is a search feature. Let’s say you want to search for videos with Daniel Negreanu. Just enter his name and any video with his name in the title or description will appear.
It is really that simple to access the content in this app. I had to make sure I wasn’t doing it wrong because it seemed a little TOO easy. Efficiency is so rare nowadays that I swore I was screwing it up.
Awesome Sampling of Content with Full Seasons of Top Shows
If you like watching televised poker, then you’re going to love this app. It includes wide array of videos and episodes from Poker Central. Under the videos section you will find a pair of poker films as well as episodes from various Poker Central programs.
Here are some of the episodes you can find on the Poker Central App:
- Season 1 of the Super High Roller Bowl
- Season 1 of the Super High Roller Celebrity Shootout
- Season 1 of the Super High Roller Cash Game
- Season 1 episodes from Live at the Bike
- Season 1 of Inside Poker with Matt Savage
- Season 1 of Pokerography
- Season 6 episodes of Poker After Dark
In addition, you will find video clips from the World Poker Tour, Face the Ace and the ongoing countdown series from Poker Central entitled 100 Greatest Poker Moments. The app also has various themed clips such as Big Hands, Good Reads, Biggest Blunders and more.
In addition, for those looking to improve your game, look at some of the videos under the Learn to Play Winning Poker section. Noah Boeken and former poker pro turned politician Tony G provide insight to various key poker topics including “Blind vs. Blind,” “Bubble Play” and more.
While not a “full” library of content from Poker Central, it is a fantastic sampling of what’s available on the network with generous helpings of their top shows. Personally, I recommend checking out the Pokerography series. I’ve watched the one on Antonio Esfandiari and some of the Phil Hellmuth episode and I’ll promise you won’t be disappointed.
The Next Best Thing to Watching Poker Central Live
Like many of you, I don’t own a XBox One, XBox 360, PlayStation Vue and don’t subscribe to one of the services Poker Central is currently streamed on. Also, I do not live in an areas serviced by Cox, NCTC or Buckeye Broadband. As such, normally the only way I am going to sample Poker Central is through their homepage or anything uploaded to Youtube.
That’s all changed with the Poker Central app. Now poker fans have the ability to sample the various programs offered on Poker Central and enjoy the original programming offered by the network. It is truly the next best thing to watching Poker Central live.
The app is available for Android, iPhone and iPad. You can download the app at the App Store, on Google Play or on Amazon Apps.
