PokerStars is once again making huge waves in the poker world, this time with the debut of a brand new mobile product called Duel By PokerStars. It’s an innovative new game designed to allow any two people around the world to play heads-up poker against each other.
Make no mistake, this app doesn’t bring “the same old PokerStars poker tables” to your mobile device. Rather, Duel By PokerStars is a brand new game, specifically designed for mobile devices, with recreational poker players in mind.
To point, the game’s designers realized that, these days, most people are constantly on the go and don’t always have time to sit for lengthy periods of time playing poker. So, they developed Duel By PokerStars to fit the mobile lifestyle. You just pick up your phone, open the app, challenge a friend to a duel, and start playing.
Duel By PokerStars Gameplay
Each duel is a 10-hand (for free play) or 20-hand (for real money), tournament-style affair. You and your opponent start each hand with a separate stack of chips. Whoever wins the most aggregate chips altogether across the 10 or 20 hands wins the duel.
Let’s say that you each start with 500 units apiece. You could thus win a total of 5,000 chips from your opponent. Therefore, you might in principle succeed in winning a few (e.g., 50) chips off your opponent in each of nine separate hands (for a total of 450 chips), but your opponent could still win the duel if he/she stacks you in the tenth hand (i.e., takes your entire stack of 500 chips).
Operational on both on Android and iOS devices, Duel By PokerStars is supported in multiple languages. Players can try the product for free as well as play against one another for real money.
The app is being launched today on limited release in Norway and will soon be rolled out across the world.
It’s Competitive, Social, and Fun
For those players who wish to take their duels a bit more seriously and learn how to play better poker, you can request hand histories and replay hands right from the app.
Moreover, while the poker play itself remains purely an individual pursuit of success, all of the big social media platforms are well integrated into Duel By PokerStars, so that you can share your successes (and bad beats) as well as challenge pretty much anybody you know to play heads up against you.
“Duel by PokerStars is a fun way to play poker, in a format that is perfect for mobile phones. Whilst I could put the game down any moment, I don’t want to – it offers all the depth of one-on-one poker, but playable whenever and against whomever I want,” said Severin Rasset, Director of Poker Room Operations for PokerStars.
Surely, beyond the money you could stand to win by beating your friends, competitive fires are sure to be stoked with every new duel.
At the moment, Texas Hold’em is the only type of poker offered via Duel By PokerStars, but future plans for the app could include the introduction of additional poker variants.
As the game develops and grows in popularity, PokerStars developers will also be likely to introduce additional features such as heads-up bracket tournaments that play down to a single winner, and more fun options.
The best part of the game is the ability to start and stop playing at will. You can take your turn acting against your opponent, then put your phone away. Once your opponents completes his/her action(s), you’ll get pinged that it’s your turn again, much like Words with Friends.
Duel By PokerStars is the biggest innovation to hit online poker in years. A true, game-changer in every sense, Duel By PokerStars will likely bring an untold number of new players to the game and, importantly, rekindle the love for poker amongst many fans and aficionados who simply stopped playing due to lack of time.
As a matter of fact, I think it’s time to challenge my Weekly Burn & Turn co-host, Shimi “The Fish” to a duel!
