PokerStars has announced that players can compete in free online poker tournaments that will send winners to meet and play against Brazilian soccer superstar Neymar Jr at a live charity event in São Paulo.

Neymar Jr signed on as a Team PokerStars SportsStar in May and has been acting as an ambassador for the world’s most popular poker site.

“Poker is a huge passion of mine,” Neymar Jr said. “It allows me to express myself away from the pitch, and I love any chance to outwit my opponents, show my skills, and beat the competition.”

Neymar Jr Charity Home Game

While beating down opponents is a huge part of Neymar Jr’s game, the footballer also has a softer side. He is heavily involved in helping others, especially those in his home country.

Neymar Jr and his family established the Neymar Jr Institute in 2014, which is aimed at helping the underprivileged in São Paulo, Brazil, providing assistance and encouragement so that youngsters will stay in school and improve the lives of themselves and their families.

To that end, Neymar Jr and PokerStars have scheduled a Neymar Jr Charity Home Game for July 26 to be held in São Paulo during the Brazilian Series of Poker (BSOP). The charity poker tournament features a $1,000 buy-in, with entry fees earmarked as donations to the Neymar Jr Institute.

Prizes Galore

Players who compete at the charity event will be vying for a number of prizes that include souvenirs autographed by Neymar Jr, an entry to the BSOP Millions, and other as yet unnamed goodies provided by PokerStars. Players can click on over to PokerStars now and sign up and play in freerolls that will award free entries to the Neymar Jr Charity Home Game.

“PokerStars is delighted to be supporting this event and the work of Neymar Jr’s Institute,” said Sue Hammett, Head of Corporate Giving for PokerStars. “It aligns with the key themes of our corporate giving programme ‘Helping Hands’ using sport to transform and enrich people’s lives. This continues our long tradition of working with charities around the world.”

Helping Hands was established by PokerStars in 2013 and has since donated over $7 million to needy causes. That amount will increase considerably due to this latest endeavor, teaming with Neymar Jr to change the lives of children and teenagers in and around the footballer’s old neighborhood of Jardim Gloria.

The charity poker tournament, which will be attended by pro players and celebrities alike, can be seen via live stream at PokerStars.tv. A number of Neymar Jr’s soccer-playing friends will likely make appearances, creating a fun-filled atmosphere that focuses on competition, but has helping others as its main cause.

PokerStars players are encouraged to take part in the freerolls and take a shot at winning a seat to the charity event. Those who don’t win and cannot make it to the BSOP should tune into PokerStars.tv at 16:00 Brazil time on July 26 and interact via hashtag #HomeGameNJR.
